Standard Test Method for Compressive Properties of Rigid Plastics

With the use of this test method, the mechanical properties of reinforced and unreinforced rigid plastics may be obtained. This includes high modulus composites, when loaded in compression at relatively low uniform rates of strain or loading. Standard shaped test specimens are used for this test.

Compressive properties include:

  • Yield Stress
  • Deformation Beyond Yield Point
  • Modulus of Elasticity
  • Compressive Strength

Although some materials merely flatten into a disk without producing a shattering fracture, in these cases compressive strength has no real meaning.

Compressive test of rigid plastics is a standard means of providing data for research and development, acceptance or rejection according to specifications, quality control, and special purposes. This test can only be considered significant for engineering design purposes when the material is being employed in applications that are essentially the same as load-time scale of the test. Applications differing much from the test parameters require additional test such as impact, fatigue, and creep.
