WMT&R's Full-Service Machine Shop
WMT&R, Ltd. regards the onsite machine shop as a key part of our service package. The Machining Centre is now fully equipped with CNC mills and lathes and manual/automatic mills. Roughing lathes and bulk sawing capacity enable us to cut difficult and complex shapes/material so that test pieces can be obtained from almost any artifact.
The shop has recently been equipped with additional capabilities to include:
- Surface grinding facilities
- grind and polish capabilities.
The machine shop now occupies twice the original floor area. New machinists have been appointed to join the existing team and help to deal with increasing demand. The staff have experience from working in tool rooms, manufacturing facilities and also with Motor Sport ventures.
Specialty/Niche Services
The facility is no ordinary test house with a range of niche capabilities supported by strategic partnerships within both industry and academia. Activities include light materials, thin sheet and foil testing, bonding and surface pre- treatment technology, polymer testing, composites and various corrosion methods.
Our Monitor Slip and Friction Tester is now fully commissioned, allowing quantitative measurements for static and kinetic coefficients of friction of Plastic Film and Sheeting. Standards covered include ASTM D1894 - 01 and certain TAPPI (Technical Association of the Pulp and Paper Industry) standards including TAPPI T549 for uncoated writing and printing paper, andTAPPI T816 for corrugated and solid fiber board. An Pneumatic Adhesion Tester with a maximum available Adhesion test of 70MPa is now installed. This equipment allows us to perform Adhesion tests on coatings, (including thermal metal sprayed), paints, laminates, bonded joints etc. to standards such as ASTM D4541, BS EN 24624, and BS EN 22063.
Sub-Zero testing -3-Point Bend
WMT&R, Ltd. now have Sub-zero testing capability having recently carried out 3-pt Bend testing at - 196C for a medical components supplier. This will soon be expanded to Tensile and other test methods as required.
Optical inspection is used routinely to monitor dimension details and to inspect for defects. The resolution is greater than 4 decimal places.
Surface Roughness Measurement is performed using a Perthometer equipped with a 1micron resolution laser. Detailed single line scans provide all usual parameters such as Ra and Rz. Whilst the associated software can be used to provide 2 and 3D type surface texture and contour plots.
