The use of bonding in the
joining of materials is a major growth technology, especially in sectors
such as aerospace, automotive and composites.
For maximum performance of adhesive systems it is necessary to optimise
characteristics of the surfaces to be joined, through the use of mechanical
and/or chemical surface engineering techniques.
WMT&R
Ltd have a range of facilities for producing and evaluating the bond durability
of a lap shear. Bond system variables such as pre-treatment, adhesive
and curing cycle may be benchmarked. Surface pre-treatment facilities include
wet, dry and flame applications. Adhesives may be applied using either hand held
or automated applicator guns, and curing cycles performed in fully programmable
curing ovens. Bonded systems are usually evaluated using the pre-exposure
techniques such as salt fog testing and stress humidity testing. Microscopic analysis of tested
samples provides back up evidence of degradation and cohesive or adhesive
failure modes.
Combined with our bonding and exposure facilities,
We offer comprehensive testing programmes to assess the performance of all
components in a bonded joint system. i.e. base material properties,
pre-treatment and adhesive.
